T
he
Bangladesh Scholarship Council (BSC)
was established
with a vision to assist students with potentials pursue higher education. In a
developing country like Bangladesh where educational opportunities are not
sufficient, many students are not able to receive standard education from
reputable public institutions. Students in different fields of higher studies
are the future resources of nation building. However, poverty hinders many
young scholars to pursue their higher studies. Undoubtedly, their development is
imperative and it can guarantee the future of the nation. Ultimately, BSCs aim
is to discover these talented individuals from the underprivileged communities
of Bangladesh and transform their ambitions and hopes into a reality.
T
he Nippon Foundation of Japan has been extremely generous
in providing with necessary fund to the BSC in implementing their Texas teacher certification renewal program. The collaboration between the Nippon Foundation and BSC has made it
possible to address the educational needs of these students. With deep
gratitude, the BSC would like to mention that the Nippon Foundation has been
supporting the council for the last fifteen years and in fact, it is the sole
contributor of the Scholarship Project of BSC.
T
ime has come to assess and evaluate what has been achieved
so far. To date, more than 3,160 students have benefited through this
program. The amount of feedback we received indicates that a good number of
them are engaged in teaching and other nation building assignments. This is an indicator
of progress and we hope to achieve more in the coming years.
Furthermore, last year the BSC has formed an
Alumni Convener Committee in order to contribute and improve the BSC
activities. Through seminars, essay contests and workshops the BSC motivates
students for their active participation. As a result, over 2,000 alumni now
have become established with prestigious posts in different parts of the
country.
I
n July 2007, the BSC was granted
special consultative
status
by the
Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United
Nations
.
BSCs goal to assist young scholars financially to pursue their higher studies
in Bangladesh will hopefully continue for many generations.
